FAQ

Do you offer bookkeeping services for the agriculture and farming industry?

Yes! We understand that ag-accounting is unique, from managing seasonal cash flow and equipment depreciation to navigating labor costs and calculations such as piece rate. Whether you are a local grower or an ag-tech startup, we help you keep your "green" in check so you can focus on the harvest.

I am an independent contractor/sole proprietor. Am I too small for your services?

No business is too small for financial clarity. We work with many freelancers, independent contractors, and single-member LLCs. We help you separate your personal and business finances, track deductible expenses, and stay ahead of estimated quarterly tax payments so there are no surprises in April.

What is the difference between a bookkeeper and what Salt & Ledger does?

Great question! While standard bookkeeping is just about data entry, we focus on Financial Partnership. We don’t just tell you what you spent; we help you understand your profit margins, manage cash flow, and prepare for growth. We are the "Salt" that preserves your hard-earned capital.

Do you handle both bookkeeping and tax preparation?

Yes! Unlike many firms that only do one or the other, we provide a "Closed Loop" service. We manage your books year-round and file your business and personal tax returns. This eliminates the "communication gap" between your bookkeeper and tax preparer, ensuring every deduction is captured and your filings are 100% accurate.

Can you help me with tax planning so I’m not surprised in April?

Absolutely. For our LLCs and Ag clients, we offer mid-year and year-end tax planning sessions. We analyze your current profit-to-date and estimate your liability so you can make strategic equipment purchases or retirement contributions before the year ends.

Do you handle payroll for workers in the field and office?

Yes. We manage full-cycle payroll for construction crews (including prevailing wage) and agricultural teams(including piece rate payroll). We handle everything from direct deposits and tax withholdings to filing quarterly payroll reports, so you stay compliant with California’s strict labor laws.

Do you offer HR support for small businesses?

We do. Beyond just the numbers, we help with employee onboarding, maintaining digital personnel files, and ensuring you have the right documentation for workers' comp audits. We act as your fractional HR department.

Can you help us with budgeting and long-term forecasting?

Yes. We don’t just look at where your money went; we look at where it’s going. We build custom financial models, "what-if" scenarios, and annual budgets that help businesses navigate seasonal dips and growth surges.

Do you offer assurance services for our financial statements?

We provide internal assurance and "clean-book" reviews. While we focus on management-use financials, we ensure your records are maintained to the highest standards, making it easy for external auditors or banks to review your files for loans and bonding.

I got flagged for an Audit with the IRS, can you represent me and/or sign off on the Audit?

ot yet! We are expecting to launch our CPA services in 2027. However, we have a network of CPA’s that we trust will be available to get the job done this year. But come back to us in 2027 for our CPA services.

How do you help with industry-specific compliance?

We ensure your business meets the rigorous standards required for your industry—whether that’s Workers’ Comp audit reviews for contractors, sales tax compliance for retail, or grant-reporting requirements for nonprofits. We keep your "Ledger" audit-ready at all times.

I’m currently a Sole Proprietor; when should I switch to an LLC or S-Corp?

This is a common question for growing businesses. We provide a Business Structure Analysis to look at your liability needs and tax savings. Often, as your net income increases, switching to an S-Corp can save you thousands in self-employment taxes. We’ll run the numbers for you to see if it’s time to make the move.

I have a small LLC here in Santa Cruz and my business is growing. Can you help me with the new hire and the required paperwork?

Absolutely! Transitioning from a "Solopreneur" to an employer is a huge milestone, but it comes with a lot of "red tape." We handle the payroll registration with the EDD, help you understand Workers’ Comp requirements in California, and set up your employee onboarding portal. We make sure your first hire (and every one after) is compliant and stress-free.

My business has been behind on our books for years. I am worried I’ll be laughed out of any CPA or bookkeeping office for being so negligent, how is Salt & Ledger different from the rest?

When starting a business from your passion, you don’t focus on the numbers, you just let the magic flow, and think to yourself, “I’ll figure it out along the way.” Then 2 or 3 or 10 years go by and you’re feeling like this. Salt & Ledger is your partner in tackling even the most difficult and past due items imaginable. We help you start from ground zero, and map out how to get your business current.

Do you offer LLC opening and business registration services?

Yes! We help entrepreneurs launch with confidence. We assist with the entire setup process: filing your Articles of Organization with the Secretary of State, obtaining your EIN from the IRS, and helping you find the business bank account that best suits your needs.

What exactly is a "Fractional CFO" and does my business need one?

A Fractional CFO provides the high-level financial strategy of a full-time executive but at a fraction of the cost. If you are struggling with cash flow, unsure if you can afford a new equipment purchase, or planning a major expansion in the Santa Cruz or Monterey Bay area, our advisory services provide the data-driven clarity you need to make confident decisions.

I have gotten quotes that are way out of my budget, what can I do? How can I manage my books if I can’t afford a bookkeeper?

Salt & Ledger offers a wide variety of services and pricing packages. We don’t believe in charging the highest amount to get the best ROI. We believe in providing materials to businesses of all sizes and revenue streams. Our most basic bookkeeping packages can start as low as $250! And if that is still too high a price, we provide Do-It-Yourself products that cap at $150, so you can have the tools you need to succeed without breaking the bank.

I’m currently using Excel to track my farm/business expenses. Is that okay?

Excel is a start, but for an LLC or Ag-operation, it often leads to missed deductions and "manual error" headaches. We specialize in migrating clients from spreadsheets to automated cloud systems like QuickBooks or Xero, saving you hours of manual entry every week.
